St George and the Dragon

When I was growing up on the farm my family enjoyed doing puzzles together. One of our favorites was made from a photograph of a figure of Saint George and The Dragon bedecked with jewels from the Munich Treasury. We spent many hours sorting through the rubies and pearls on the white Knight and his horse, subduing an emerald dragon. The symbolism of mankind overcoming the earth with the power of faith and the reward of eternal life became an ingrained part of my consciousness. But as I grew into my maturity I also grew into awakening to the power of the land and began to see the story differently.

…..

It has been known for thousands of years now that the earth has bands of energy pulsing through its mantle, forming a kind of grid or matrix, an invisible but tangible force of nature. Across historic landscapes are monoliths, calendar sites, stone temples, and circles placed by people aware of these silent but potent threads. Sites such as Stonehenge in England are located at an intersection of lines identifiable by dowsing.

In recent history, great stone cathedrals have been built in place of the earlier structures, replacing those of indigenous peoples with a new vocabulary of sacred symbolism, and ushering in the modern age of faith and art and science. Saint George slays more than the serpent with his spear. He is subduing the earth with a heavenly mandate.

But the energies remain, directing and informing us through the landscape and we can come into harmony with them again if we chose to.

…..

Endeavor to slow down, feeling the spirit of place beneath your feet and come into alignment with the energy of where you are. The earth reaches out to us with our nascent understanding that we may not even be consciously aware of. Some cultures call it the serpent, the snake or the dragon; the ancient guardians of sacred sites and treasures.

…..

I had been working with the landscape where I live, and connecting to the beautiful water that is everywhere here. One day in my studio I was making water color and ink drawings, and made a painting as a release, as if I was merely the hand holding the brush.

When my son saw it he recognized the figure of a dragon beneath the temple and I realized what had manifested in this painting. The web, the matrix, the energy of the earth–– the four elements, connected to water, wind, the earth and and fire around us.

Affirmation of the power of land to inform, uplift, and inspire us when we are listening. Turn off the static, step outside of the ordinary, and engage with your birthright holiness.

You need look no further than beneath your feet to find your treasure.
