Dynamic Books

Accordian Book

Early on I began creating one-off books of the work featuring poems and paintings in ink. These accordion fold books could be opened and read as pages, or unfolded into dynamic, mantel-length poetry-sculptures. The books come in boxes whose lids I adorn with found objects such as mushrooms, seed pods, and vines.

I also make Japanese folding box books to hold the hundreds of postcards that were generated in the year-long exchange with my sister. As the postcards are loose, their order of appearance changes with each viewing, making for a fluid experience in revisiting the work.

I also create mobiles of haiku and other poems as a kind of dynamic book. The constant transitions of the pages in the air and light of the room captures some of the ephemeral qualities of haiku. Their delicate elements evoke an endearing sensibility.

In the Japanese tradition I also create hanging scrolls to be placed in trees. Some of these are made of ceramic. The effect is very beautiful, and the trees become living books, singing with poetry in every season.
